At the heart of nonnotte's shirtmaking is this heavy broadcloth material. The material is made from a thick 35-count single yarn spun from organic extra-long staple cotton, and was jointly developed with Kaneta Textiles in Shizuoka Prefecture. Kaneta Textiles is a weaving company in which I have complete confidence, as they utilize high-density looms, unparalleled in the world, to weave thick yarns to the highest possible density. The finish for this fabric is a "clear finish." This was chosen to create a material that simultaneously possesses the seemingly contradictory qualities of a beautiful sheen like that of a dress shirt and toughness. My ideal is a shirt that retains a certain dignified elegance even when the wearer throws it on casually without ironing. That wish is embodied in this material.
It was a difficult challenge. However, Kaneta Textiles stepped up to take on this challenge, and after many years, they finally completed a shirt fabric unlike any other in the world. Since it is 100% cotton, it will naturally wrinkle, but the uneven wrinkles characteristic of thick yarn are actually one of the characteristics of this material. A rugged yet supple wrinkle that can never be imitated with fine yarn. I myself wear it without ironing, and I think that's fine. I hope that you will come to appreciate the toughness of this material as you wear it for many years. In addition to the standard "White," we have prepared "Silver Peony," which is inspired by the pale pink of peony flowers, and "Mulled Basil," a khaki with a European nuance. All of these colors bring out the profound character of this heavy broadcloth. Draping Open Collar Shirt Type A One of nonnotte's signature shirts, constructed using three-dimensional cutting (draping). This season, we've added an open-collar version to the "Draping Shirt Type A," which we've been offering since Spring/Summer 2025.
The most distinctive feature of this "Type A" is its bold departure from the traditional men's shirt archetype in its interpretation of the armhole structure. The inspiration comes from the spirit of the early 1900s, when women's couturiers constructed clothing like three-dimensional sculptures, concealing the lines of the human body. nonnotte has reinterpreted this spirit for modern men's clothing. The dramatically dropped shoulder line is designed to wrap around from back to front, creating a cocoon-like, oval silhouette. The complex armhole design creates a beautiful, directional drape when the sleeves are down, resulting in a new form that envelops the body. Furthermore, the side seams are shifted significantly to the front rather than the back, and the structure, which appears to bend at a right angle from that point, creates a unique surface configuration on the body. The front, side, and back each have different appearances, allowing you to enjoy the three-dimensional effect from 360 degrees. And finally, I would like to mention the overwhelming durability of the heavy broadcloth used in this shirt. The fact that the designer himself has worn this garment for over five years without ironing it, and that it's still in pristine condition, is proof of the potential of this material.
